Cup Mode Guide

Cup Mode is the first real endgame door in Build A Football Team. It is a simulated 3D knockout that starts at the round of 32. You do not play the matches on sticks. You watch the eleven you built. The entry rule is simple and strict: Squad OVR must be 93 or higher with chemistry counted. Empty slots, grey lines, and off-position cards all sit inside that number. If the portal is still locked, you do not have a cup problem — you have a chemistry problem or a hole on the pitch. New accounts should still finish Getting Started and how to play before treating this portal as the session goal.

The mode is live. It is not a coming-soon banner and it is not local split-screen. You enter from the lobby, the squad locks, and the bracket runs on the server. Other managers are in the same 25-player lobby before and after; they are not sitting on your couch.

The 93 OVR gate and the locked eleven

Check Squad OVR on the saved Best Team, not on a half-edited draft. Chemistry is included. A raw average of 93 with grey lines can still sit under the gate once the game applies links. A raw average of 90 with green and blue neighbors can sit over it. That is why this wiki keeps repeating “chemistry included.” Fix lines before you buy one more Prime from the Hourly Shop.

When you confirm Cup Mode, the eleven locks for the tournament. You cannot swap a CM at half-time. You cannot Refresh a grey RB after a round-of-32 loss. Save the squad you actually want, then enter. If you are still moving cards around, you are not ready. Use the OVR checklist to find the slot that is dragging the number, and the team planner if you need to see the 4-3-3 on paper.

What the lock means in practice:

  • Take a linked 93 you trust over a chaotic 95 you built thirty seconds ago.
  • Do not enter during a shop experiment. Finish the experiment, save, then queue.
  • Community farmers report that jumping into a cup can reset lobby quest progress because you move to a cup server. Treat that as reported. If an 8-hour quest is about to pay, collect it before you touch the portal.

Matches simulate from the round of 32. Win and you move on. Lose and the cup is over for that run. Early-round rewards are small compared with the time you spend watching. A 93 that is barely linked will usually die in the first or second round and pay almost nothing. Hold serious cup grinding until the eleven is closer to 100 with lines that stay green. The best team guide is the page for that climb. This page is the rules of the door.

Custom kits show up with Cup Mode. They are cosmetic. They do not raise OVR. Pick one you can stand to watch for seven simulated matches and move on. The podium near the leaderboard shows top squads in the lobby — useful as a chemistry screenshot, useless as a shopping list of real-world superstars, because every card here is fictional.

Win five cups and you unlock the 105+ Cup standout cards. That is the collection prize, not the coin prize. The claim point is the golden-style portal near the leaderboard podium in the lobby (the exact prop can shift in Early Beta — walk the podium after the fifth win). Those cards sit in a band above captains (99) and Primes (100+). They still need a legal slot. A 105 ST on the wing with no tags is a wasted standout.

There is a practical cap on how many of these you should expect to run as a full eleven. Community write-ups mention a small pull limit on the 105 band from cups alone. Do not plan a 4-3-3 made only of cup cards. Plan a spine of captains from a finished 2026 set — the method is how to get captains — plus Hourly Shop Primes, one or two standouts in the holes that actually need the rating, then later Limitbreakers and GOAT Edition if they drop. The players hub is the collection map.

Why chemistry beats raw OVR inside the bracket:

The simulation reads the team you locked. Grey lines are a weaker eleven even when the average looks fine on a thumbnail. Managers who scrape in at 93 with a nation-linked back four and a league-linked midfield go further than managers who stuffed three unlinked 98s on the wings. You cannot prove this with an official formula; you can prove it by running the same cup twice, once grey and once green. The green side scores more and dies later.

Cup kits and podium shots also trick people into copying a highlight reel. Copy the shape: a linked 4-3-3, a real GK, full-backs in full-back slots, a captain in its nation cluster. Do not copy a list of famous names. This game’s athletes are fictional, and the tier list talks in bands and roles for that reason.

Prep checklist before you queue:

  1. Eleven slots filled. No holes.
  2. Natural positions first. Secondary only where it keeps a link alive.
  3. Neighbor tags mostly nation or league, not five competitions at once.
  4. Squad OVR 93+ with the lines applied.
  5. Squad saved. Quests claimed if you care about the 8-hour timer.
  6. Enough patience to watch a round of 32. If you cannot sit through a simulation, you will rage-exit and waste the lock.

After five wins, slot the standout where the OVR checklist said you were leaking, then go again. Cup Mode is a loop, not a one-off cutscene. Between cups, farm on how to farm and keep one 2026 nation moving so the next captain lands in a legal hole. Check GOAT XI and patch notes after big drops — Bloxheed has already changed cup-adjacent rewards once, and Early Beta will do it again.

The fifth trophy is a collection key, not a coin printer. Treat each cup as a test of the eleven you locked, cash the standout when the counter hits five, and only then decide whether the next push is another captain, a Prime, or a GOAT hunt. Managers who enter every 93 they roll, grey lines and all, spend evenings in the round of 32 and never see the 105 portal light up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common squad-building questions.

What OVR do I need for Cup Mode?

93 Squad OVR including chemistry. The portal stays shut until the saved Best Team clears that number with links applied.

Can I change players during a cup?

No. The eleven locks when you enter. Fix chemistry and save before you queue. See the chemistry guide if lines are still grey.

How do I get 105+ Cup cards?

Win five cups, then claim the standout from the lobby portal by the podium. Those cards still need a legal 4-3-3 slot.

Are cup matches played live against another person?

They are simulated 3D knockouts from a round of 32. The lobby is still a 25-player online space. This is not couch co-op or split-screen.

Should I enter the moment I hit 93?

Enter once to learn the UI. For real grinding, wait until the eleven is better linked and closer to 100. Bare 93s usually die early and pay little.

Do cups cancel my quests?

Community farmers report that entering a cup server can reset lobby quest timers. Claim an 8-hour quest before you queue if you do not want to risk it.
